  • Environmental Futures in a Time of Reaction: An EDC Invitation to Collaborate

Contribute to a Virtual Roundtable Discussion, Collection of Written Contributions, and/or Collaborative Project Proposals on what the Ecological Design Collective can be during a time of reactionary politics.

As the Ecological Design Collective (EDC), we have always sought to cultivate a space for envisioning possible futures grounded in environmental resilience, justice, and imagination. But as recent global shifts in politics and governance cast shadows on efforts to foster transformative change, we find ourselves confronted with a vacuation of futures and what once felt possible. Reactionary turns in many nations are constraining spaces for ideas, and for some, it might feel as though pathways toward equitable and ecologically grounded futures are narrowing.

Yet, within this challenging landscape, spaces like the EDC have the opportunity—and perhaps even the responsibility—to step into the void left by these shifts. While conventional institutions may falter in their capacity to imagine, let alone enact, sustainable futures, the EDC remains a dynamic, inclusive, and collaborative space for exactly this purpose. Our community holds the potential to nurture visions of futures that may seem obscured or forgotten amid prevailing political tides.

We invite you to join us in using this space to navigate and address these pressing questions:

    • How can we imagine futures that exist beyond the limitations of conventional governmental and institutional frameworks?
    • What strategies can we employ to resist the forces that constrain our capacity to envision alternative possibilities?
    • What does environmental activism look like in this era of reactionary politics, and how can we learn from comparative, global perspectives on these challenges?

Our goal is to foster a conversation that connects struggles across the globe, examines the rise of right-wing and reactionary politics, and explores how these dynamics impact environmental justice and futures. By staging a comparative dialogue, we can identify meaningful approaches to environmental activism and design creative, adaptive responses.

    Join Us in Collaboration

To move this conversation forward, consider contributing to one or the following collaborative opportunities:

    1. Virtual Roundtable Discussion: We aim to convene a roundtable featuring voices from diverse backgrounds and regions to discuss environmental futures in this challenging political moment.
    2. Collection of Written Contributions: We plan to publish a collection of short written pieces exploring these themes. Contributors are invited to share brief reflections, essays, or analyses that examine how environmental futures are being shaped and contested globally.
    3. Collaborative Project Proposals: Do you have an idea for a small project that aligns with these themes? We are open to pursuing proposals through our network and are prepared to consider financial compensation for contributions where needed.

If you are interested in participating in the roundtable, contributing written work, or proposing a project, please fill out this form with a brief description of your ideas by January 31, 2025.

This is an open invitation to co-create and expand what it means to imagine and design futures together. Let’s transform this moment of reaction into one of resilience and radical possibility.
