EDC Grounding: Join us for a Guided Tour of Black Earth Rising at BMA
September 11 @ 5:00 pm – 6:00 pm EDT

Join the EDC for our September Grounding Event where we will gather for a guided tour of Black Earth Rising, an exhibition that celebrates the splendor and fragility of nature at the Baltimore Museum of Art. The exhibit closes on Sept. 21, 2025, so this tour is a great opportunity for those who have not yet experienced this collection to experience it before it disappears!
Organized by guest curator and renowned author Ekow Eshun, this exhibition of 22 works explores today’s climate crisis from a new perspective and celebrates our shared connections to the natural world. The exhibition’s name is taken from terra preta—Portuguese for “black soil”—which refers to a type of fertile earth found in the Amazon Basin that was created by ancient Indigenous civilizations many thousands of years ago. Recent decades have witnessed a renewed interest in Indigenous land management practices as sustainable alternatives to conventional agriculture. This rediscovery has highlighted the resilience and innovation of Indigenous peoples and challenged colonial narratives that dismissed their knowledge and contributions to environmental stewardship.
Together, we will explore this juxtaposition of anthropogenic toxicities and the return to ancient ways of knowing and being in relationship as an essential Antidote to Toxicity.
Among the artists featured are:
Firelei Báez, Alejandro Piñeiro Bello, Frank Bowling, Teresita Fernández, Todd Gray, Sky Hopinka, Tyler Mitchell, Jamal R. Moore, Wangechi Mutu, Otobong Nkanga, Jaune Quick-to-See Smith, Yinka Shonibare, Alberta Whittle
The show takes its title from terra preta, Portuguese for “black earth,” which refers to a type of fertile soil created by ancient Indigenous civilizations in the Amazon basin thousands of years ago. Recently rediscovered by scientists, it remains more fertile than ordinary land.
Black Earth Rising is part of the BMA’s Turn Again to the Earth initiative, which explores the relationships between art and the environment across time and geography.
Our tour will be led by BMA Contemporary Art Curator, Antoinette Roberts. We will meet in the lobby of BMA at 5 pm.
