The Sludge Hub & Company brings you an uncouth and twisted opportunity to explore the reaches of ecological design in the post industrial spaces of Central Appalachia’s abandoned coal mines. As an organization devoted to occupying the crater of the departing coal industry, the Sludge Hub hosts projects, researchers, and communities with Earth First principles and a drive to restore the ecology of these abused and discarded spaces.
Whether you’re interested in becoming an abandoned mine land owner, a restoration project lead, or just a curious looky-loo, we’d love to have you along for our next journey out into the coalfields. The core focus of this trip is to imagine the possibilities for our next area of interest; The Gruesome Grove, which sits adjacent to our current holding, The Dirty Nine. Located on a mountaintop overlooking the North Branch Potomac river and derelict company town of Oakmont, WV, this forgotten piece of America’s energy story is hidden deep in the hollers of Appalachia and is ripe with beauty and the whispers of ancient cryptids.
The site is located three hours west of Baltimore and carpools are available for those who haven’t got access to their own vehicle. If you want to be there, then we want you there. We’ll find a way to get you there.
