At Flowering Baltimore: Sunflowers Working Towards Web Repair, Dr. Robin Gunkel will discuss the historical role of sunflowers from their use in indigenous cultures- aiding in medicine, ceremony, and war- to looking at their roots in Greek myths. Robin will also explore recent Western scientific research into plant cognition & learning and share lead extraction data from a phytoremediating sunflower project in East Central Baltimore managed by Rhizae Renewal Collective, a bioremediation collective, who Robin founded in 2018.
This talk will be happening as part of artist, Mandy Morrison’s exhibit, Journey of the Invader Spirit, which is an exploration of industrialism to environmentalism from Baltimore’s urban landscape to Brazil’s rainforests. (https://bmoreart.com/event/mandy-morrison-journey-of-the-invader-spirit)
