Looking Back & Building Forward: Earth Day Celebration in Curtis Bay
April 21, 2023 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm EDT
Residents and workers in South Baltimore have faced over 100 years of environmental justice challenges and are leading with a vision for healthy, safe and clean communities. Three of our former neighboring communities, Wagner’s Point, Fairfield and Hawkin’s Point have already been uprooted and displaced due to health and safety risks posed by the cumulative impacts of dozens of hazardous and polluting industries. Current community development goals are limited by a legacy of environmental contamination impacting our air, land and water.
Now, after decades of community leadership calling for a focus on environmental justice and equitable development — we have an unprecedented opportunity to address longstanding issues from the past while building our new vision for the future.
Join us for the debut screening of a new film shedding light onto the past hundred years and stay for a listening session and discussion with Maryland’s top environmental regulator, MDE secretary Serena McIlwain on building a systematic approach to environmental justice in South Baltimore.
The most critical voice at this event is yours – youth, residents and workers in our South Baltimore communities of Mt. Winans, Cherry Hill, Westport, Curtis Bay, Lakeland and Brooklyn along with the newly developing community at the Baltimore Peninsula. Join us for this special event and make your voice heard for a healthier, safer and cleaner South Baltimore.
“Looking back, if we had a strong cross-community coalition back in the 1980s, then we would have had a chance to prevent the total displacement of three entire communities (Fairfield, Wagner’s and Hawkin’s Point) at the hands of rampant environmental injustice.” said Tiffany Thompson, Curtis Bay resident. “Imagine, we could be SB10 right now! Looking forward, we need the SB7 Coalition to be an unyielding force for environmental, economic and social justice through community led-development that lifts up all and pushes nobody out.”
