The Rights of Things: How to Live Together with Objects in a Common Damaged World

November 13 @ 12:00 pm - 1:30 pm EST

“The Rights of Things” proposes a new pact between humans and objects, expanding rights beyond living beings to include the material world. Written by Blanca Callén, Tomás Errázuriz, and Ricardo Greene, the book presents ten manifesto-like rights that spark ethical and intellectual debate on our response to the climate crisis. The seminar explores excerpts linking today’s eco-social crisis to the need for a transformative socio-material contract. Mixing theory and practice, the work acts as a cultural catalyst, using legal language to inspire collective responsibility and recognize the rights of all more-than-human entities.

SPEAKER: Blanca Callén Moreu is a lecturer and researcher in the Social Psychology department at the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), and member of the CareNet research group (UOC). Her work lies at the intersection of STS, material cultures, and collective political action. In recent years, she has been researching electronic waste production and repair cultures in the context of the climate crisis, through the case of repair communities and the rematerialization of telecommunication infrastructures. She is a co-founder and a member of Restarters BCN.
