Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet

July 2, 2023 @ 9:00 am 10:30 am EDT

Do you have a deep sense of care for the Earth, and want to find ways to bring mindfulness to your climate response?

If yes, please join us on a new journey where we’ll engage in a course that brings to life the teachings from Thich Nhat Hanh’s book Zen and the Art of Saving the Planet. This online course is designed to empower our human resilience, and we will do it together, in-person, right here in Baltimore.

This journey has two components. online offerings from the Plum Village community detailed below and weekly in-person sessions at NoMuNoMu (709 N. Howard St, Baltimore). We will meet Sunday mornings from 9 am until 10:30 am., beginning May 21, 2023. You are welcome to attend all or one of the gatherings.

Course Syllabus
Week 1 – Embracing the Pain. Become able to ground ourselves in our breath and body to create the stability and clarity needed to handle the difficulty of our situation.
Week 2 – Cutting Through Illusion – Learn to move beyond a human-centric view of the world, to break out of our separation and touch a greater wonder and mystery in life.
Week 3 – Face our deepest fears about our death and the possible destruction of our civilization to have the peace and energy to respond to big challenges.
Week 4 – Learning to Rest – A chance to rest & restore, and to reflect on course learnings up until this point,
Week 5 – Brave Dialogue – Discover strategies for listening and speaking to help us in the challenging dialogues needed to heal relationships and address the climate crisis.
Week 6 – Mastering Mind and Habits – Explore how Buddhist psychology and self-compassion can help us take care of fear, anxiety, and des
pair, transform our habits, and identify our deep aspirations.
Week 7 – Action Dimension – Identify and nurture the power of community to support us beyond this course and feel empowered to walk in the company of bodhisattvas.

A few reasons to consider coming downtown on Sunday mornings:

-Join a grounded purpose-driven community
-Train in deep listening and compassionate communication
-Nourish a profound relationship with the Earth
-Turn your climate concern and anxiety into sustainable action

NoMuNoMu is an intersectional arts collaborative working to challenge the perpetual systems of oppression within and beyond the art world. They work collaboratively with artists + grassroots organizations at the intersections of race, age, gender and orientation. They see collaboration in the arts as a means to challenge the status quo, specifically in informing movements of decolonization, resource sharing, and learning new ways of being within and through the field of art. NoMuNoMu works to curate radical exhibitions; provide space and resources for local artists to create; and work with activist and cultural grassroots movements to organize through the use of screen printing, resource sharing, and art production.
