  • Call for Artists for CROSSWAYS, a public art project with Vital Matters

    Thanks to a Public Art Across Maryland Planning Grant from Maryland State Arts Council, Vital Matters has begun to work on the first of four sites that will be part of a citywide, multi-year project called Crossways. The project is conceived as an arts-based way of enhancing Baltimore residents’ connections with their waterways and one another across 4 out of 5 of the city’s Watersheds. We begin in West Baltimore, with the Gwynns Falls neighborhood, nestled between Maiden’s Choice Run and the Gwynns Falls, which runs through Lower Gwynns Falls park to the east. The last phase of planning for this phase includes the hiring of a visual artist, who will work together with our Artist Facilitator Team (Valeska Populoh, Sanahara Ama Chandra, Michele Minnick, Maura Dwyer, and Rejjia Camphor) and the Gwynns Falls Community to conceive, design and build a temporary (1-2 years) installation that will express and support the community’s sense of identity, history, and/or future in relation to their place along the Gwynns Falls watershed.

    INFO SESSIONS August 25 at noon ET or September 4 at 6:30 pm ET, on Zoom: Learn more about Vital Matters, the Gwynns Falls Community, the team you will be working with, and this project.     Artist Fee: $600 This covers the artist’s commitment from October through December of 2025. More funds have to be raised to cover the implementation phase of the project, which will begin in 2026.

    Selection Criteria:

    1. Artist demonstrates skill and artistry through work samples and description of prior experience

    2. Artist is able to make the time commitment in October-December, and expect to commit to next phases of the project in 2026.

    3 Artist has experience making work for the outdoors, or demonstrates a clear understanding of how they would translate their skills to make durable (lasting 1-2 years) work for the outdoors in public space.

    4. Artist demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively, and enthusiasm for a collaborative process.

    5. Artist demonstrates a resonance with the subject matter–Baltimore, Water, Community, etc.

    7. Preference will be shown towards artists who identify as BIPOC and who live in Baltimore City or the greater Baltimore area.
