  • Call for Proposals: 2026 Wormfarm Decomposium

Posted by Lindi Shepard on January 20, 2026 at 11:21 am

Taking place October 9-11, 2026, the Decomposium is a three-day symposium exploring decomposition and the intertwined processes of death, decay, rot and renewal from a variety of perspectives. Through a series of free and ticketed events, the event will bring together artists, scholars, farmers, composers, funeral directors, scientists, chefs, historians, poets, conservationists, death doulas, entrepreneurs and more, to acknowledge the inevitability of decomposition, and embrace entropy as a creative, generative force. Park Hall in Sauk City, Wisconsin will serve as the primary gathering hub, with the potential for activities to take place at nearby satellite locations.

The gathering will invite audiences into intimate, surprising conversations—about death and new life in the animal, vegetable, mineral and spiritual realms. The weekend’s programming will weave together literary arts, visual arts, music, presentations, workshops, community meals, a publication, and participatory rituals rooted in themes of decomposition, change, and ecological interdependence.

We are currently seeking proposals for programming, projects, and collaborations that will help advance the vision of the Decomposium. Selected contributors will co-create an immersive weekend that interrogates/celebrates decomposition as both a biological reality and a metaphor for cultural, social, and creative regeneration.

Proposals are welcome from individuals and groups working across disciplines, and may take place indoors or outdoors, at Park Hall or at nearby partner sites.

Examples of proposed activities could include (but are not limited to):

    • Curated talks, workshops, or participatory activities
    • Site- or theme-responsive artworks, performances or demonstrations
    • Literature or poetry readings
    • Lectures or panel discussions
    • Animation or time lapse film of the processes of decay
    • Engaging “field trips” to nearby, relevant locations
    • Celebrations or rituals related to death and renewal

Applications are due Monday, February 9, 11:59pm CST.

Each applicant may submit up to two ideas for consideration.
