Hi all, I am Jason Barahona, the Program Coordinator at Degrowth Institute, a newer non-profit based in the U.S. Like many of you, we are focused on challenging global economic growth for the purpose of achieving social and ecological justice.

It is not revelatory to say that the United States has long acted as a spearhead for the paradigm of growth that we experience today. One which has fostered our current multi-crisis. But we can also recognize that the U.S. has the potential to provide our movements with numerous networks of people who have long been challenging and continue to challenge the idea of ceaseless economic growth. With numerous examples never having heard the words “degrowth” or “post-growth”.

To continue to build and strengthen the movement in the U.S., we are hosting a gathering in Chicago which we are calling, “DeSchool.” You can find out more by visiting our website: https://www.degrowthinstitute.org/de-school-2025. More details are also included below.

If you are able and interested, join us this July 26-29, to learn from each other, collaborate, and determine collectively where we go from here.

Best,

Jason

Registration is now open until June 26, unless all spots fill up sooner. We have space for 75 participants, so please submit your registration form as soon as possible! If registration fills up, we will open a waitlist.

Please feel free to share the registration link and program with your networks as well!<font face=”tahoma, sans-serif”>

Tuition and Tuition Assistance
DeSchool 2025 tuition works on a sliding scale. The Standard fee is $175. We invite those who have the funds to please help support others in the community by choosing the Community-Supporting tier, at $250. There is also a Community-Supported tier at $100, meant especially for students and those working in environmental and social justice advocacy.

DeSchool tuition allows us to book meeting facilities and provide breakfast and lunch for all four days. It does not include dinner, lodging, or transportation costs. We will be coordinating couchsurfing, ridesharing, and hostel-style lodging for attendees interested in those options.

If you need additional financial assistance to attend, please contact Jason Barahona at jason@degrowthinstitute.org.

Lodging
We are working on booking hostel or dorm rooms for the event, at a rate of $65-110 per night per person. If you are interested in that option, please indicate that on the lodging question and submit your Registration form by May 13th, 2025.

Rideshares & Solidarity Housing
We would also like to encourage as much DeSchool community support as possible, and we are coordinating rideshares and solidarity housing for those interested in a ride to Chicago or a place to couchsurf during the event.

If you are interested in offering or receiving a rideshare or solidarity housing, please submit the linked form by May 13th, 2025. Once we have all the requests and offers in, we will send out further information to help pair people up.

We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in Chicago this summer! If you have any further questions about DeSchool 2025, please check out the DGI website or contact jason@degrowthinstitute.org for any other questions.

Sincerely,
The DGI Team
