Recommended features for the non-member homepage of EDC

    o Welcome Message:

    – The homepage often includes a simple and inviting message such as “See what’s happening in the world right now” or “Join the conversation.”

    o Engaging Visuals:

    – The homepage features visually appealing ecologicalimages and video content from various users and accounts to entice members.

    o Featured Content:

    – The homepage showcases trending topics and popular posts from different members and groups, allowing visitors to explore a wide range of content across various sub-interest groups.

    o Exploratory Features:

    – The homepage includes different categories of group themes such as eco-arts, eco-film, Imaginarium, planetary health, eco-anthropology… etc., to make it easy for members to realize which groups they can join and increase their participation.

    o Preview of User Profiles:

    – The homepage displays snippets of member profiles with profile pictures, interests related to ecology, what they do and what brought them to the platform to give potential members a glimpse of the community and network of EDC that they can be a part of.

    o Call-to-Action:

    – “Sign Up” or “Create an Account” emphasizing the benefits of joining EDC.

o Open Source, Privacy and Security Assurance:

    – Commitment to privacy and security, highlighting open source benefits and reflecting on its relationship to EDC’s vision of bringing committed people together in one space that takes these values seriously even through its own design.

    o Footer with Additional Information:

    – The homepage includes a footer with links to essential pages such as About, Privacy, Terms, and Help, which provides people with access to more information about EDC policies and perhaps information about registration as a nonprofit. The footer can also reflect on this moment as part of EDC’s own trajectory.

Proposition: close EDC for users only and have only the homepage per the above. People can only access the platform if they join, so they are enticed to join. The platform as is doesn’t need people to join it to see what is happening; hence, the motivation is lower.

    Jonas:

    Seems acceptable

    Mike:

Maybe we can experiment but i can see it could be discouraging?

But what about get the magazine rolling and on the ground first and see from there?

I a lot of times make my posts visible to members only bec of half baked thoughts so you will need consent of participants

    Anand:

I will share this doc with Elvis and work on that end and see. I will also keep seeing what the Zoom function kinks are. The other thing I am working on on the tech side, using deflect on page (a lot of human rights NGO use it) for a privacy centric security service that is open source

    Next Steps:

    – Call

    – Rather than open call, have a list for invitation (before next mtg– each 5 people on chat)

    – Mike will take up invitation letter

    – When do we send the invitation out? early next week so we have enough time to catch people before summer and going out of office and we plan to have it out

    – Timeline: we get invite out may 15, they send by June 15– too early

    – Jonas: isn’t available till end of August

    Mike: fine to wait

Jonas: I would like to contribute so nice to wait

Mike: we could wait, and give us sometime

    Jonas: works for me absolutely

Anand: can Jonas do the homepage features and landing website design mockup?

Jonas: can do that, and will also look at ref for other websites

Anand: to mike, can we imagine it coming out of cambridge and jhu? are there pepople in your universe who would be interested? resources to support?

Mike: what kind of support? because i am new here also so network is still forming

Anand: like a grad student for editorial team for instance.

We need to be able to provide stipends for grad students and some little support at least

Mike: how much are we thinking? 10K?

Anand: 10K would imply a lot of hours

Jonas: let’s start on cambridge front re commissioning front.. mike, do you have students who would be interested? rather than start by asking for financial support

I worry that logsitically it would be more difficult to have another editor in cambridge next to two coordinators here

Mike: we can think of student contributing first piece and ill strategize more. Knowing public anthro, there are ways to frame it correctly
