Before colonizers arrived, the Piscataway, or “the people where the rivers bend,” lived here. Sumwalt Run flowed beneath an open sky as a tiny capillary connecting what is now North Baltimore to the Atlantic Ocean.

The big flooding event last week, how did it look near you on the Jones Falls? I was away when it happened but the impact is so evident along the Stony Run where it looks like the water level rose several feet. Crews have been clearing the tunnel but there’s still so much debris well above the waterline.

Biking along the Jones Falls this morning with my daughter, we saw one of the yellow crowned night herons nesting along the river, just across from the streetcar museum. An adult with one of the chicks, the closeup is via phone + binoculars but ok enough.
