I have an idea for an event, that I’d love feedback on.
It’s inspired by Extinction Rebellion’s third demand, the Citizens’ Assembly on Climate and Ecological Justice. I feel like it is the most imaginarium-focused aspect of the climate emergency movement. A citizens’ assembly (CA) is supposed to lead to a democratically supported way out of the climate crisis using a process that’s not limited by today’s flawed political processes. People from all backgrounds and walks of life would be presented with information on the crisis and various policy proposals and legislative solutions. They would have facilitated discussions that would lead to a consensus on what we should do. Those proposals would hopefully be clear-eyed, uncorrupted, rational approaches to the emergency, and we would want our government to protect us by enacting them. For the Imaginarium, I’m thinking we could put on a mock Citizens’ Assembly. We would invite people from all walks of life to participate, we would have facilitated discussions, and we would generate an outcome that could be presented to politicians and the general public as a demand for a just way out of the crisis. It could be a one-day thing or a multi-day thing. Actual CAs have been weeks-long. We could have videographers who film parts of the conversation and help create a summary of the process and the conclusion.
Thoughts?
