    EDC Homepage Design

Results for the prototype homepage sent to us by Elvis:

    https://community.ecodesigncollective.org/welcome/

    Feedback for Elvis

    • Add Stories
    • We should consider a more effective way of differentiating groups, perhaps through color-coding (or some other method) instead of just the EDC curators’ bold arrow as it is now.
    • trending posts can be below that
    • Remove stats
    • Think about something other than discussion posts for the landing page
    • Tags function is good as filters for navigation and organizing – conv is networked
    • The heading of security assurance might not be adequate because we don’t have robust encryption and warrant canaries
    • Maybe add links to newsletters (+checkout latest newsletter, which would also have the latest events)
    • Twitter feed
    • Signing up should be displayed prominently
    • Survey

Resend to increase participation in the survey (all ten people who submitted we know)

Newsletter can also be a space for people to sign up

What are we giving you to make you sign up? Political and scholarly discussions are on Twitter, the news is in the news, and social may be Facebook

Maybe EDC’s addition is more relevant to professional space and networking and so we can capitalize on resource banks

Next meeting; work on alternatives to social media and why we follow them

    Zooming in on the magazine

    – Do we have right interface visible to writers when we solicit

    – Runway; should we be ready to launch; make sure we don’t promise more than we can deliver timing of elements line up

    – Mark brought in someone who does front-end design; has given her admin access; have someone in place;

    • – This is question for mark

    – M: How much runway for contributors? // Editorial// Minimally– end of May for submissions?

-A: 2-4 pieces every few months; 1 or 2 every three months for example? If you give people a month to write

-Word limits could be another way of managing the amount of work–

    • – 1500 words ish?

    – 1-2k; SCA fieldsites posts are generally 1-2k

    • -issues that come out together, or release one a week;

-J: Are we all really interested in this?

-M Shortform things to sort of reward/ bring grad students in. Not a journal; there’s a lot of stuff out there already; if it’s easy to do on our end, easy to process, people see things and want to write something– that makes sense; would keep us on our feet and we’d be more flexible. But a more consistent roll out, might be more difficult.

    • -Invitations to contribute on a seasonal basis and roll them out as they come

    – Should there be a theme? If we are solliciting for the spring should there be a theme, or just an open call.

    – Document for themes?

    • -Alaa—groups can also be solicited/ highlighted/ formed after the groups
    • -Munira- ecologies of militarism possibility

    – More discussion on range of word limit; maybe 750-1250 (alaa); 1-1500

    – ecologies of militarism

    – Sapiens has a nice pitch form

    • (WP forms; on the back end; could set it up there)

    – Anand: Respecting the community and saying we expect to have people in EDC who can speak to this

-J: Project forum sprint; don’t want to overestimate what an open call will bring; want to give an idea of what it looks like before we “open”

-M: Editorial pull, how much do we want to expect from ourselves re: curating something

-A: I think actual editing with feedback is important, esp for developing scholars.

    – M: recoginition that there is going to be some labor involved in that; probably lots of folks that would want to publish to this stuff

-An: A lot of ac-adjacent members who would want to write things

    • – Masimo Paolini; not an academic but is interested in conversations

    Attendees: Mike, Anand, Jonas, Alaa

    Agenda:

    General Updates:

    • Anand and Alaa meeting Center for Planetary Health Center today to start collaboration

    Website development:

Communities on platform (development of groups):

    • No introduction when you open platform, and so we need it because it only opens as a feed – How do we improve experience and engagement?

    Splash page?

How can we structure people’s experience of web platform that conveys what we are doing– includes community space but isn’t exhausted by it

opening for regular useers makes sense for timeline/ don’t want a splash feed when I am already aware of what EDC does

opening for new users may open to something else: ‘pick 5 interests’ to create a customized experienced –> maybe autopopulate on feed about the new member that joined

deeper difference between log out page and regular

Different login sections? First field of vision may be join us with a moving graphic, so landing page is encouraging to login/ join

    Develop:

    1. Welcome to EDC, sign up, check our recent projects

    2. customized user experience

    3. better timeline look

    4. page about projects we are involved in/ blurbs/ their own pages?

projects could be also individual edc curators projects (jones falls (Carissa and Lee), aqua (Nicole))

must be intuitive and just connect with members and themes

won’t be paralyzed by what ‘counts’ when we feature

perhaps develop a protocol — so what counts? more than once person involved? happening through community?

    climate imaginarium

what spaces host projects that is not a group? shall we have it as a tag? must be worked into architecture of groups that already exists

in an ideal world, these groups can be funded by EDC

but perhaps also just a sense of affiliation

eg. carbon leadership forum –> have just loose affiliates without necessarily being sponsored but just allies

a page featuring diff projects just losely affiliated bec there aren’t enough (climate imaginarium, green falls, ecoarts, ecoanthros are only accessible ones)

diff bw a group with shared interests talking vs groups who talk to each other

    we have 3 things:

    – people coming together to talk about shared interest

    – loose affiliations

both 1 & 2 are EDC as only as social media (fine but it would be how we envision EDC)

    – funded groups with their own project is EDC as something beyond convening

    Question for later to consider

All groups are projects but not all projects are groups

    Funds (deferred):

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1boCRlafbzcsGUY1KDocf3kaKwp5OwLYfMRzBX992p4M/edit?pli=1#gid=0

    Emojis:

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_ScsJgIo94DFFP0UnKnpFqoPxsrPzPWg-HXv0F3sIak/edit

Other options can be found on dashboard, under settings

    Emotions:

    Happy

    Sad

    Shocked

    Angry

    Grateful

emotions will have titles so we it is okay for them to be arbitrary

Add like (generic leaf — matching brand)

    maybe switch happy with joy?

care and laughing are difficult to convey without relying on the face

getting rid of grsteful? no keep it and just add like

    call grateful ‘thanks’

    Let’s launch and roll out

IT (JHU): Anand has reached out and it is in process but Mark is on vacation

Recommended features for the non-member homepage of EDC

    o Welcome Message:

    – The homepage often includes a simple and inviting message such as “See what’s happening in the world right now” or “Join the conversation.”

    o Engaging Visuals:

    – The homepage features visually appealing ecologicalimages and video content from various users and accounts to entice members.

    o Featured Content:

    – The homepage showcases trending topics and popular posts from different members and groups, allowing visitors to explore a wide range of content across various sub-interest groups.

    o Exploratory Features:

    – The homepage includes different categories of group themes such as eco-arts, eco-film, Imaginarium, planetary health, eco-anthropology… etc., to make it easy for members to realize which groups they can join and increase their participation.

    o Preview of User Profiles:

    – The homepage displays snippets of member profiles with profile pictures, interests related to ecology, what they do and what brought them to the platform to give potential members a glimpse of the community and network of EDC that they can be a part of.

    o Call-to-Action:

    – “Sign Up” or “Create an Account” emphasizing the benefits of joining EDC.

o Open Source, Privacy and Security Assurance:

    – Commitment to privacy and security, highlighting open source benefits and reflecting on its relationship to EDC’s vision of bringing committed people together in one space that takes these values seriously even through its own design.

    o Footer with Additional Information:

    – The homepage includes a footer with links to essential pages such as About, Privacy, Terms, and Help, which provides people with access to more information about EDC policies and perhaps information about registration as a nonprofit. The footer can also reflect on this moment as part of EDC’s own trajectory.

Proposition: close EDC for users only and have only the homepage per the above. People can only access the platform if they join, so they are enticed to join. The platform as is doesn’t need people to join it to see what is happening; hence, the motivation is lower.

    Jonas:

    Seems acceptable

    Mike:

Maybe we can experiment but i can see it could be discouraging?

But what about get the magazine rolling and on the ground first and see from there?

I a lot of times make my posts visible to members only bec of half baked thoughts so you will need consent of participants

    Anand:

I will share this doc with Elvis and work on that end and see. I will also keep seeing what the Zoom function kinks are. The other thing I am working on on the tech side, using deflect on page (a lot of human rights NGO use it) for a privacy centric security service that is open source

    Next Steps:

    – Call

    – Rather than open call, have a list for invitation (before next mtg– each 5 people on chat)

    – Mike will take up invitation letter

    – When do we send the invitation out? early next week so we have enough time to catch people before summer and going out of office and we plan to have it out

    – Timeline: we get invite out may 15, they send by June 15– too early

    – Jonas: isn’t available till end of August

    Mike: fine to wait

Jonas: I would like to contribute so nice to wait

Mike: we could wait, and give us sometime

    Jonas: works for me absolutely

Anand: can Jonas do the homepage features and landing website design mockup?

Jonas: can do that, and will also look at ref for other websites

Anand: to mike, can we imagine it coming out of cambridge and jhu? are there pepople in your universe who would be interested? resources to support?

Mike: what kind of support? because i am new here also so network is still forming

Anand: like a grad student for editorial team for instance.

We need to be able to provide stipends for grad students and some little support at least

Mike: how much are we thinking? 10K?

Anand: 10K would imply a lot of hours

Jonas: let’s start on cambridge front re commissioning front.. mike, do you have students who would be interested? rather than start by asking for financial support

I worry that logsitically it would be more difficult to have another editor in cambridge next to two coordinators here

Mike: we can think of student contributing first piece and ill strategize more. Knowing public anthro, there are ways to frame it correctly
