@Alaa and I saw a really interesting artwork at the BMA the other day, Play Me Home by Tiona Nekkia McClodden. The artwork reflects on themes of race, history, and southern locality; but what drew our attention to the EDC was the recurring motif of the four o’clock flower, which becomes a symbol for resilience, rootedness, and place-making in the midst of adversity. There was a time lapse sequence of these trumpet flowers opening and closing with the cycles of the sun, beside other sequences of replanting these vines along harsh easements. I’d love to hear what other folks think! It’s up at the BMA thru May

Wonderful! Thank you for sharing.. it makes me think of the sunflowers who turn their faces toward the sun, or proteas who flower after wildfires, or corpse flowers that bloom every seven years or so.. …. all as you so beautifully observe as, ” symbol for resilience, rootedness, and place-making in the midst of adversity.” I’m inspired to see the exhibit! There are quite a few good things up at BMA now, with a focus on women artists – if anyone would like to go – “Making Her Mark: A History of Women Artists in Europe, 1400-1800” “Art/Work: Women Printmakers of the WPA” “Martha Jackson Jarvis: What the Trees Have Seen”.
