This is neat!
Our house is actually on a corner lot with the house behind us not only situated in the other direction, but we’re at a slightly higher elevation and separated by a small thatch of woods. We consider ourselves very lucky because I would say most of the houses in our neighborhood have smaller yards and other homes behind them with the back of each home directly facing each other just like in the video thumbnail. At best, they’re separated by simple fencing – a pretty pathetic attempt at establishing the principle of private property that rules supreme in our cultures way of thinking when many of their neighbors can see them on full display every night sitting in their living room. In practice, sun and pretty skies is more often preferred over curtained privacy.
However, it would be really cool if a grouping of neighbors in this kind of situation decided to combine their yards – at least visually – to create a “village” garden. We have a massive garden and spend a lot of time by ourselves toiling in our “superior” yard, but I think I’d be a little jealous if our neighbors with lesser yards put them together and built themselves a village garden. It’s just not considered an option in this culture…

That really is a very cool video. I sense the influence of A Pattern Language there. Yes, tear down the fences!
