SUMMARY:Whose Planetary Consciousness? Stulman Lecture with Sunil Amrith
DESCRIPTION:Join Johns Hopkins University’s Department of History for the Stulman Lecture with Sunil Amrith. \nRecent work has suggested that the emergence of planetary consciousness marks a threshold in human life on a fast-warming planet. Drawing on Indian debates\, from the last quarter of the twentieth century\, the lecture asks: what exclusions are built into the idea of the planetary and does planetary consciousness stand in the way of earthly justice? \nSunil Amrith is the Renu and Anand Dhawan Professor of History at Yale University\, with a secondary appointment as Professor at the Yale School of the Environment. Amright is also the Director of the MacMillan Center for International Studies and serves as Yale’s Vice Provost for International Affairs. Amrith’s research focuses on Modern South Asian\, Southeast Asian\, and Indian Ocean history\, the history of migration and diaspora\, and environmental history\, especially the history of water and climate. \nThe lecture will be held in Hodson 210 from 4-6 pm with a reception to follow in the Gilman Hall Atrium.
