Join us next week for a conversation with artist Mbongeni Buthelezi, featured artist at COP27 (the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change) held last November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.  
 
Through his unique technique of painting with plastics, Buthelezi’s art draws attention to climate change and the hazards of environmental waste, especially plastics. South Africa, where the artist lives and works, has one of the highest rates of plastics waste in the world. Every year, between 90,000 and 250,000 tonnes of trash enter the oceans that surround the country. 

“Siyafundisana” is an isiZulu phrase meaning “We Teach Each Other.” With this phrase as our guide, join us live from Johannesburg on Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 12pm (EST) for an interactive conversation with this inspiring artist on his life, his career and his perspective on global environmental conferences, as well as experiences on the ground in his local South Africa.

This conversation is presented and moderated by anthropologist and EDC member Kristine Roome. The EDC is a community for collaborative learning and organizing, with ample space for such member events. Submissions are now open for Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors, Grist's cli-fi contest. Imagine 2200 seeks stories of 3,000 to 5,000 words that envision the next 180 years of equitable climate progress—roughly seven generations—imagining intersectional worlds of abundance, adaptation, reform, and hope.
 
All winners and finalists will have their story published in an immersive collection on Grist's website. Stories will be judged by a panel of literary experts, including acclaimed authors Paolo Bacigalupi, Nalo Hopkinson, and Sam J. Miller.
