Artist Asad Raza and curator Kristine Roome are joined by cultural theorists Andreas Bandak and Daniel M. Knight as we follow the development of a public artwork that focuses on listening to the ecosystem. Raza has been commissioned to create a permanent art installation on the River Granta in Cambridgeshire, a rare chalk stream sustaining habitats for a range of wildlife. Well known for his collaborative approach to projects, Raza is partnering with ecologists, microbiologists and architects and now with us at the EDC. This is a unique opportunity to be part of an ongoing conversation with an artist in the process of creation.

Join us for the opening of The Future of Here: A Glimpse of a River Culture to Come at the Peale Museum in Baltimore on Thursday, February 13th from 5 pm to 7pm. This speculative environmental exhibition, open Thursdays through Sundays until March 30th, invites visitors to imagine a future for the Jones Falls River and Chesapeake Bay beyond our fossil-fueled present. Growing out of a class co-taught by artist Jordan Tierney and anthropologist Anand Pandian at Johns Hopkins University, the exhibit considers how future cultures might interact with the remnants of our time, including the objects we leave behind. The show features artworks and artifacts inspired by the local watershed, blending historical research with speculative fiction. The Future of Here encourages creative thinking about how we might face an uncertain future, with a maker workshop for visitors to make artifacts of their own. The Ecological Design Collective (EDC) invites proposals for a curated digital series exploring the themes of Reimagining Land—an ongoing 2024–2025 itinerary that critically examines how land is shaped, contested, and reimagined through ecological, historical, and creative practices. Honoraria and other support will be available.

Through this initiative, EDC seeks to engage with land as both a material and symbolic space—one that carries histories of dispossession and resistance, ecological transformation, and speculative futures. Reimagining Land considers land not just as territory, property, or resource but as a site of deep cultural, political, and environmental entanglement. By fostering dialogue among artists, writers, designers, activists, and scholars, this series aims to open new ways of thinking about how we inhabit, use, and care for land in the face of ongoing social and ecological change.

These virtual practitioner conversations, taking place in March, April, and May 2025, will extend the themes of Reimagining Land into an online space, complementing EDC’s Groundings series, which explores Baltimore’s ecology, history, and contemporary place-making efforts through experiential, site-based events.

• Community Vision Co-Design Seminar: On February 14th, 21st, and 28th, the Morgan State University School of Architecture and Planning (SAP) is hosting a series of seminars at BluePrint Cafe that brings together students and Better Waverly residents. This gathering space allows everyone to connect over coffee in a relaxed atmosphere, fostering meaningful dialogue about the neighborhood’s future.
• Virtual seminars on Building Capacity for Sustainable Development: Join Harvard’s Sustainability Science Program, as they launch a new seminar series on sustainability. The seminar will be held virtually on February 26th from 12 pm to 1pm.
• Call for submissions to the Flooded Pine Press: The Flooded Pine Press has put out a call for papers on the subject of “Finding Joy and Solidarity in the New England Anthropocene.” Submissions are welcome from any and all creators who are willing to imagine a livable future starting from the regional scale.
• Environmental Humanities Visiting Research Fellowships: The Institute for Advanced Studies in the Humanities at the University of Edinburgh welcomes applications for the 2025-26 Environmental Humanities Visiting Research Fellowships. Fellowships are two to four months long. The deadline for submission is 17:00 GMT on February 28th.
