We've had an inspiring season of expanding our ecological imaginations in pursuit of creating 'antidotes to toxicity.' Next Wednesday, we are excited to host YOU -- our community -- for a gathering in celebration!

If you are curious about the EDC and have not yet joined us for any events, this is the perfect opportunity to introduce yourself and learn about our growing collective!

We will convene at Red Emma's from 5-7 pm. A delicious plant-based meal and light refreshments will be provided.

There will be a station to create hand-crafted holiday cards for your loved ones and to send to members of our EDC community around the world!

We invite you to gather in community under the guidance and wisdom of one of our most ancient plant allies: Comfrey. Known as a powerful wound healer, Comfrey invites us to explore their therapeutic uses while engaging our senses in a hands-on salve-making session. Alongside EDC curator, herbalist, and land steward   Alyssa Dennis, these workshops will invite reflection on Comfrey's ability to mend not only bodies but also communities.

On December 2nd, the EDC gathered at the Station North Tool Library for a conversation with Jessa Wais and Blanca Callén Moreu about repair communities in Baltimore and Barcelona. Moderated by EDC curator, Anand Pandian, the discussion explored how communities a world apart are countering the toxic cycle of overconsumption by building vibrant cultures of repair, reuse, and shared knowledge. The discussion highlighted how local repair initiatives can strengthen community ties and offer practical antidotes to fast and individualized consumerism.

Teaching and Organizing for Environmental Justice in Baltimore

“We’ve been talking about who’s being acknowledged in these spaces: who’s being spoken to, and who’s just being spoken about… Is it the voice of the residents, or an academic voice speaking to other academics?”

This question sits at the heart of a bold experiment in environmental justice education. In this conversation, anthropologist Anand Pandian and community organizer Shashawnda Campbell of the South Baltimore Land Trust reflect on their partnership in teaching a course that brought students off the JHU campus and into South Baltimore’s Curtis Bay Recreation Center, alongside residents facing some of the city’s greatest environmental burdens. They share what it took to bridge the divide between academic and community knowledge, redistribute authority, and create work that mattered beyond the ivory tower—demonstrating what can happen when teaching becomes intertwined with a collective fight for justice.
